Curator

The word “curator” has sometimes been defined as caretaker, and that is what we are – the caretakers of collections in the various discipline types of museums in America. Curators take care of objects and art held by their museums, complete research on collections, plan exhibitions featuring collections, and write and publish about those collections. We are exceptionally acquisitive – always wanting new objects for our museums!

Mission

The Curators’ Committee serves curators of disciplines in the essential field of collections research, care, and exhibition and participates in AAM Annual Meeting program sessions that involved museum collections, acquisition, preservation, and interpretation.

History

The AAM Standing Professional Committee, Curators’ Committee (or CurCom) was founded in late 1974 and was originally called the Curators’ Affinity Group. There is a Board of representative curators from across the country, from all types of museums. It is comprised of elected Officers and Members-at-Large, appointed Committee Chairs, and recruited Regional Representatives. The Board serves you - curators, independent curatorial professionals, and other collection caretakers of the museum field.
